Factors Influencing Your Performance in Apex Legends

To excel in Fortnite, players need to hone their skills.
To excel in Fortnite, players need to hone their skills.

In Apex Legends, victory is defined as being the last person standing in the intense battle royale. This means gamers who embrace Apex Legends as their game of choice are driven by the desire to be the sole survivor. In order to continuously win they also return to the game over and over to build up their skills, and the type of practice that they utilize to do so includes mastering different movements (from jumps to lurches and strafes), memorizing maps, understanding how to loot and manage inventory, and strengthening team coordination.

In addition to gameplay practice, another factor that can help a gamer with their performance is their choice of gear, because having the gear that’s right for you will allow you to execute at your highest level in the most decisive moments of the game. The type of gear that usually plays an important role in Apex Legends performance includes hardware like your monitor, controller, keyboard, mouse, headset, and mousepad. For gamers who choose to use a keyboard and mouse, the mouse is particularly important in terms of performance and its impact cannot be overlooked. This means that if a PC gamer is intent on improving their performance within Apex Legends, they will have to be selective in their choice of mouse.

The qualities most gamers focus on when choosing a mouse include things like its shape, the gamer’s hand size and grip style, comfort, the type of sensor used, DPI settings, and other specs. These are all important considerations in regards to their final choice of mouse, however, a gamer should also recognize the importance of the most common scenarios that they will encounter in Apex Legends. This is due to the fact that these in-game scenarios, and the mechanics that the gamer will utilize in them, help determine how successful a mouse is at boosting their performance.

The Most Common Scenarios and Mechanics in Apex Legends

Since in-game scenarios play such an important role in determining a mouse’s effectiveness, it’s essential that gamers have an understanding of some of the most common scenarios that they will face when they play Apex Legends. These include the following:

• Using 180s or air strafing off Octane’s launch pad to find opponents in Broken Moon.

• Using a shotgun with Gibraltar to accurately hit an opponent while they’re mid-tap strafing.

• Tap strafing in or out of a wall bounce (which also requires quick slides).

• Using an R-301 and your recoil control skills with Horizon to shoot your opponents.

• Hitting a moving opponent in World’s Edge via tracking.

The Most Important In-Game Mechanics

In order for a gamer to accomplish each of the scenarios described in the previous section, they need to utilize a combination of mechanics involving their mouse including lifting, tracking and multi-angle movements. How proficient they become in executing these mechanics will then determine how well they perform in Apex Legends. It is because of this that ZOWIE’s Human & Machine Innovation Lab organized motion capture and electromyography (EMG) tests so that they could analyze the objective data obtained from the tests and better understand what helps gamers perform each of these mechanics more effectively.

• Lifting

When tests were run that focused on lifting, they showed that using the S series of mice led to noteworthy results. The eye-catching data for the S series was a result of the large tilt angles on the left and right sides of this series of mice that are complemented by finger support points which altogether combine to give the gamer the ability to apply upward force more easily. These design details lead to quicker lifting and a smoother progression into a follow-up motion for gamers that use an S series mouse.

• Tracking

After our tracking tests, our teams found that the S series of mice brought about the most stable mouse movements by the gamers tested, which caused their accuracy percentages to be higher than when they used other mice. These results are due to the shorter overall design of the S series and the curves on the left and right sides which work in tandem to allow the left and right palm muscles to exert more stable control over the mouse, while also giving the gamer’s grip more flexibility when tracking.

• Multi-Angle Movements

The U series of mice were shown to have allowed claw-grippers to perform multi-angle movements superbly during our tests. This is due to the inward-curved design on both sides of the U series’ mice which allows gamers to lift with more agility and stability. Furthermore, the curve on the left-side, together with the overall curvature of the back, results in faster click speeds by the index finger according to the data from our tests. Lastly, the right side’s curve supports a more balanced force exertion on both sides of the palm that produces greater stability for the gamer when they move their mouse.
